The dual-inspiration of Brown's music and Haynes' Brown-inspired stage comments prompted Chuck to form the Funky Drummer Quartet, which made its debut here last year at Winston's. Now, he's back with The Cold Sweat Sextet, which salutes Brown's timeless songs and percolating grooves without sacrificing the sophistication or improvisational fire of jazz.
The sextet features two first-rate saxophonists, San Diego jazz patriarch Daniel Jackson (who counts Ray Charles and Buddy Rich among his previous musical partners) and Azar Lawrence (who has collaborated with everyone from Miles Davis and McCoy Tyner to Busta Rhymes and Earth, Wind & Fire). Together with ace bassist Greg McKinney and keyboardist Mikan Zlatkovich, the band has the potential to ignite on every song (expect a debut album soon).
